Piano lessons, unlocked!

Welcome to Piano Unlocked! This site will give you all the keys to learning the piano. And I’ve created these online piano lessons especially for adults! Are you brand-new to the piano? Well, even if you’ve never read a note of music before, I’ll be sharing clear, easy-to-follow how-tos that will have you playing and understanding music from the very first lesson. Do you already play and are looking to brush up on your skills? Well, my videos are full of exciting tidbits and bonus information that will make you love the piano even more!

My Story

I’ve been playing the piano since I was five and began studying seriously when I was 13. I was no child prodigy, but I was lucky—I had a teacher who didn’t just help me play better; he showed me all the nuts and bolts and ins and outs and hows and whys of playing so that I could help myself play better. Everything I learned about the piano is something you can learn about the piano too!

Piano Lessons for Adults (Piano Inside View)

There are actual nuts and bolts inside a piano, but those aren’t the nuts and bolts I help you learn about!

The tools I use to help
me prepare a concert
piece are the same ones
I teach my students.

Now, that doesn’t mean you have to want to become a concert pianist to learn from me. The great thing about real, solid knowledge of the piano (and, I bet, about a lot of other things, too, but don’t quote me on that!) is that it’s useful no matter how far along you are on your piano journey and no matter how far you want to go. The tools I use to help me prepare a concert piece for my next recording are the same ones I teach to help students play their first pieces. Whether you want to play your favorite song for yourself and only for yourself, or you want to play holiday music at your next office party—or whether you want to become a full-fledged virtuoso—the same tools will get you there.

Why Piano Unlocked?

That’s why I’ve started this site. Over and over again, students come to me intimidated by the idea of taking lessons as an adult. They worry that piano-playing is a skill that needs to be gained as a kid. But that’s not true. Adults just need to learn a little differently than children do—with more of the nuts and bolts made explicit.

So I’m here to give you those keys. And I’m here to share the joy that the piano can offer.

But seeing is believing, right? And when it comes to music, hearing is even more important! I wouldn’t feel right about just telling you that I know the piano well enough to teach you the keys to playing the piano yourself. So instead of making a video lesson to go with this first post, I’ve made a video performance. I’m playing one of my own compositions: Jortunioca, which I wrote for my friends at the Pop-Up Music School. They do wonderful work sharing world music with children ages 3–10 throughout Chicago and online.

And remember: the keys I use to unlock the music I play are the same keys that unlock piano playing at every stage of the way.

I’m so excited to begin our work together!
