Since 1991, I have taught students at every stage of their piano journey. I’ve taught at community centers and at European music festivals. I’ve taught in prisons and in elegant townhouses. For every student, I combine the insight of an award-winning performer with kind, supportive mentorship.
As a performer, I focus on neglected masterpieces. I have recorded CDs of pieces by Ernest Bloch, Vittorio Giannini, Peter Mennin, Norman Lloyd, and Vincent Persichetti. No familiar names on that list! My next recording will be of pieces by Paul Creston. That’s a whole disc of world premieres!
My recordings have made it onto Fanfare’s annual Want List twice. Mark Lehman of The American Record Guide called my recording of pieces by Mennin and Lloyd “an indispensable addition to the discography of American music.” And David DeBoor Canfield wrote that I am “a true master of [my] instrument.”
The way I learn music is the same way I teach students to learn music. It works just as well for beginners and casual music-lovers as for amateur performers and professionals. (If the history of piano teaching interests you: Theodor Leschetizky developed the style of teaching I use, and he taught some of the greatest pianists of the late 19th and early 20th century!)
I will help you understand the building blocks of music so that practicing is mentally exciting. And I will teach you the technique of playing piano so that practicing and performing is physically stress-free.
I’ve set up Piano Unlocked so that you can learn along with my video lessons and so that you can also work directly with me. You can send me questions, and I’ll answer them in Q & A posts. Or you can even work with me one-on-one through Skype or Zoom.
Let’s unlock the keys to the piano together!
